Sometimes when we misplace our keys, forget that we are wearing our glasses while we are looking for them, or stand in the middle of the room not being able to remember why we walked in in the first place, we think “Ok, something is wrong with me!”. But the truth is, everyone experiences forgetfulness every once in a whole. It happens to everyone because of distractions, stress, and having to multitask. However if memory lapses more often than it used to, then that could be a sign of dementia.

Cells found in your brain which are called neurons tend to be in jeopardy to oxidation by highly reactive and short-lived molecules. Reprobate molecules fight cells much in the same way that oxygen “attacks” a freshly cut apple, which leads it to turn brown and having it age faster. The cure to that comes through antioxidants, which are usually found in vegetables, fruits, beans and nuts. Consuming these foods helps the brain in collecting these antioxidants which helps protect parts of your brain, mainly the hippocampus that is responsible for retaining memories!

The main 3 memory-aiding antioxidants are vitamins E & C as well as selenium, all of which are found in many foods. Here’s a short and sweet list of all the antioxidant-bearing foods you need to be stacking up on.

  • Blueberries

  • Salmon

  • Eggs (Egg Yolks)

  • Apples

  • Turmeric

  • Oatmeal

  • Leafy Greens

  • Lentils

  • Fish

  • Nuts
